CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA - [May 9, 2016] - After more than 10 years of driving compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in its mission to convert its entire fleet from diesel fuel to cleaner burning CNG, US Air Conditioning recently installed its first new CNG fueling station. The new Galileo Nanobox system was installed at the company's main distribution center located in the City of Industry to replace its old system that needed an upgrade in order to meet higher demand from the increased number of CNG vehicles its fleet. The new station not only fuels the company's 32 CNG vehicles, but also serves US Air Conditioning's 24 employees who have invested personally in a CNG vehicle. US Air Conditioning provides the fuel and the use of the station at no cost to its employees.

Thanks to $100,000 in Clean Transportation Funding from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC), the new CNG station will generate an average of 10,000 therms of CNG each month. This will help reduce greenhouse gases by 636 metric tons each year, which is the equivalent of the CO2 emissions from 71,500 gallons of gasoline, 683,394 pounds of coal burned or 1,480 barrels of oil.

The MSRC allocates Clean Transportation Funding from a $4 surcharge on vehicle license fees, specifically to be used for local projects designed to reduce air pollution from motor vehicles. Over its 25-year history, the MSRC has distributed more than $350 million in funding to innovative clean air projects, like electric vehicle charging stations, throughout LA, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties that have helped to remove as much as 11,500 tons of air pollution from the skies of Southern California.

According to US Air Conditioning, the MSRC's funding for these types of clean air projects is important to encourage businesses to make an investment in the environment. "We feel that the last 10 years shows our commitment to reducing our negative impact on the environment and that it is another testament to our company goal to limit our carbon footprint in the communities where we deliver high efficiency air conditioning products," said Jack Scarsi, Vice President of Operations and Finance. "And several grants from the MSRC over the years have helped us with our clean air goals."

US Air Conditioning's investment also benefits its employees. "Our employees love the perk of free fuel for their vehicles and have discovered how functional CNG vehicles are for personal use. Not only do they save hundreds of dollars in fuel every month, they can also use the HOV lanes to cut their commute time down significantly, thus increasing their quality of life while reducing their budget for gasoline," he explained.

Having just celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015, US Air Conditioning is one of the largest privately owned HVAC distributors in the world. Headquartered in the City of Industry, California, US Air Conditioning's distribution territory covers five western states with branch 46 locations. With over 400 employees, US Air Conditioning prides itself on having all the right products in the right places with unbeatable service for our customers throughout the territory.

The City of Industry-based US Air Conditioning Distributors was one of four California companies honored by the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) during the organization's Arrow Awards ceremony held in San Diego at the California Resource Recovery Associations 35th annual conference. The Arrow Awards were created by CPSC with a grant from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) given to the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority.

Because of their "Cash for Clunkers" mercury thermostat take-back program, the City of Industry-based US Air Conditioning Distributors received the Infinity Award for service and take back this year. The program gave contractors incentives to collect and properly recycle mercury thermostats by placing recycling bins at all their branches. By collecting more than 55 lbs. of mercury in 2010, the company also won a Waste Recycling Award from CalRecycle. The company also saved $85,000 in fuel by switching to natural gas trucks, recycled 73,180 lbs. of scrap metal, 12,320 lbs. of corrugated cardboard, 3,360 lbs. of white paper and 500 lbs. of electronic waste that same year. Their pro-active efforts make them a leader in the nation and a champion for the environment.

CalRecycle Names US Air Conditioning Distributors a Winner in their 2010 Waste Reduction Award Program for green business practices

US Air Conditioning Distributors, headquartered in City of Industry has been named a winner in California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) 2010 Waste Reduction Awards Program. "US Air Conditioning is committed to protecting and improving the environment by recycling mercury thermostats and taking a leading role as an environmental advocate in the HVAC community," according to John Scarsi, Vice President & CFO.

US Air Conditioning installed a natural gas fueling station and purchased 17 clean-burning natural gas-powered trucks, which produce only 5 percent of the emissions of a diesel truck of the same size. Also, US Air Conditioning Distributor produces almost all of its electricity for the main 250,000 sq. ft. location in the City of Industry with one of the largest solar cell arrays in the U.S. At 850 KW, it produces enough electricity to power more than 400 homes.

"TRC applauds USACD's proactive efforts in promoting the proper management of waste mercury thermostats at their locations throughout California. We believe their efforts are an exemplary model and encourage the industry to follow their lead," says Mark Tibbetts, Executive Director, Thermostat Recycling Corporation.

US Air Conditioning's mercury thermostat recycling program, investments in on-site solar generation and natural gas-powered trucks illustrates the company's commitment saving California's resources. "WRAP acknowledges businesses throughout California recognition for implementing practices that help protect the environment and preserve out natural resource," said CalRecycle Director Margo Reid Brown. WRAP 2010 honorees will a receive certificate and window decals to notify customers of their achievement.

US Air Conditioning, headquartered in the City of Industry, received an Honorable Mention in the Infinity Arrow Award category for Service and Take-Back. Applicants in the Infinity Arrow Award category must demonstrate that they have developed an outstanding "take-back" program for one or more products that the company manufactures.

U.S. Air Conditioning voluntarily developed a "cash for clunkers" stewardship program for collecting and recycling out-of-service mercury thermostats. Although California now has a mercury thermostat recycling law, US Air Conditioning created an added incentive for contractors and do-it-yourselfers to recycle old mercury thermostats by offering a discount on the purchase of a new thermostat when the old one is returned to the company for recycling. US Air Conditioning works collaboratively with the Thermostat Recycling Corporation to recycle the thermostats that have been collected, ensuring safe handling of the elemental mercury contained in these devices.

Because of these efforts, US Air Conditioning has recycled more than 12.5 pounds of mercury - nearly twenty-five percent of all mercury recycled in California since the new law went into effect. That might not sound like much, but a single gram of mercury can contaminate a twenty acre lake. US Air Conditioning is the World's largest privately owned HVAC distributor.

"This awards program was designed to recognize the businesses that are integrating product stewardship into their operations and creating green jobs in California," said Heidi Sanborn, CPSC Executive Director. "We are pleased to spotlight US Air Conditioning's contribution to removing a very toxic metal from our waste stream."

What are you doing with your old mercury thermostats?

Example of typical thermostats that contain mercury

Even though a new California law went into effect July 1st 2009 to increase the collection and recycling effort, many HVAC contractors still did not know where they could take the mercury thermostats once removed from the home/business. US Air Conditioning Distributors (USACD), headquartered in City of Industry, wanted help out by going above and beyond in the mercury thermostat recycling effort.

"We wanted to help customers recycle old mercury thermostats, so we asked them bluntly what they were currently doing with the old mercury thermostats that were taken off the walls of homes and business. Some HVAC contractors said they have a large collection with several hundred old thermostats back at their shops. Some contractors said they cut out the mercury bulbs and kept them in a jar until they can figure out what to do with them. Unfortunately, a few contractors would not make eye contact after being asked the same question", notes Tony Albers, Product Manager. It was clear contractors knew thermostats containing mercury should not be thrown in the trash but many still did not know where to recycle them.

To assist California in keeping mercury thermostats out of landfills US Air Conditioning Distributors started a "Cash for Clunkers" thermostat recycling program offering HVAC contractors a $5.00 instant rebate discount off the purchase of a new thermostat. This program was open to all HVAC contractors for recycling and collection of any brand of mercury thermostat. It's just like the environmental effort to get toxic lead paint out of playgrounds and asbestos out of schools.

According to Jack Scarsi, Vice President of Operations "the Cash for Clunkers recycling program was only going to run for a short time, but it was so successful USACD decided to keep it going for 3 months. The basis of this program was simple. When a HVAC contractor brings in an old mercury bulb thermostat to a USACD parts counter, they can get a single $5.00 instant discount off the purchase of a new Source One LX thermostat".

Although the program was well received, USACD had to overcome the issue that some HVAC contractors had already acquired large collections of mercury in loose glass bulbs. Each glass bulb contains about 3 grams of mercury and there is a common phase that says "One Gram of Mercury Can Contaminate a Twenty Acre Lake".

The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) which is set up to accept the recycled thermostats from HVAC distributors would only permit mercury to be returned in a complete thermostat housing. This meant the whole thermostat must be shipped to the TRC which includes all the plastic covers. According to a representative at the TRC, they do not accept plain mercury or mercury in loose glass bulbs as these items might break during return shipment to the TRC and cause a toxic leak. USACD did not want this roadblock to stop contractors from recycling, so they contacted a local Hazardous Household Waste (HHW) center on behalf of the HVAC contractors. They were informed that the local HHW centers are only set up to accept mercury from homeowners, not from businesses like HVAC contractors.

Each glass bulb contain about 3 grams of mercury

This error leaves a hole in the mercury recycling and collection effort. HVAC contactors know it's wrong to throw away old thermostats containing mercury, but did not know it was wrong to cut and save the glass mercury bulbs out of thermostats. On behalf of HVAC contractors, USACD investigated and discovered if you are an HVAC contractor that has been collecting mercury in loose glass bulbs, you will need to contact your local waste management company and ask for your local "Small quantity hazardous waste generator program". This program is set up to accept mercury from HVAC contractors and small business for a nominal fee.

USACD is motivated to be the leader in the mercury recycling and collection effort. "Not only is USACD recycling at all their California locations, but they are implementing mercury recycling in all Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Idaho locations also", Albers said.

US Air Conditioning Distributors has served the Southern California market for almost 20 years and has branches located in Northern California, Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona. Besides supplying economical generic parts and supplies and original replacement parts, creative programs like this reflect the company's strong ability to meet the customer needs of the HVAC contractors. Contractors can call the US Air Conditioning Call Center (877) 922-5423 or to find a location click here.
